Klein Karoo Wine Route

'Karusa' is a Khoi-San word meaning 'land with little water' - describing the semi-arid plateau of the Klein Karoo.

Karusa is a family operated and managed wine and fruit farm and is run by family business partners Jacques Conradie (Winemaker/ marketing), Saretha Conradie (PRO), Theo Landman (Estate Manager) and property owner Johann Landman (Business Consultant).

Karusa is situated at the foothills of the majestic Swartberg in the tranquil and scenic Cango Valley in Schoemanshoek, close to Oudtshoorn. The farm is en-route to the world-famous Cango Caves.

The original farm, Vogelsang, was bought in 2004. A total soil and climate research project was undertaken to give a better understanding of the terroir of the farm. We used this information to make decisions on the planting of cultivars and clonal selections best suited to the area as well as streamlining existing orchard management.

Karusa is the first and only Premium Private winery in Oudtshoorn.

At Karusa we believe that what we do in the vineyard is directly reflected in our wines.

Our wines reflect purity, brought on by our minimal interventionist methods, resulting in characterful wines with a sense of origin displaying and reflecting the diversity of the Klein Karoo.

Made by nature ~ nurtured by man

Beer at Karusa

Karusa not only produces fine wine, but is also credited by pioneering the first full grain microbrewery in the Klein Karoo.

With the seasonality of the winemaking process, it gave way for time and space to produce craft beer for the big volume of European tourists that flock to Oudtshoorn. The soft fresh and unpolluted water from the Swartberg catchment area proved to be perfect for clean, clinical, fruit driven and refreshing styles of Ale produced at Karusa.

The extreme heat of Oudtshoorn’s summer is the perfect time to quench your thirst with our Long Neck Blonde session beer; kicking back with a Karoo Tapas platter. For a more serious complex ale, try our Premium Draught ~ The Karusa Zwartberger. And for the cold Karoo winters there is nothing more satisfying than our espresso infused chocolate stout called The Caveman’s Dry Stout ~ perfect in front of our fireplace at the tasting facility.

Our beers are bottle conditioned and alive ~ thus fermenting in the bottle to obtain the “bubble”. Please keep the bottle upright and in the fridge.
Craft beer drinkers do NOT drink beer from the bottle ~ decant slowly into an appropriate glass leaving the last 5-10ml of yeast sediment in the bottle.

No preservatives ~ no sterile filtration ~ no pasteurization ~ natural as nature intended.

Our orchards are grown on some of the oldest soils in South Africa.

With its unique exposition and micro climate, our fruit reflects a sense of place. The consistent low winter temperatures ensure efficient chilling units for even budbreak. Minimal frost on the farm prevents unwanted fruit damage. With quality irrigation water, ample sunshine and strict pruning and thinning practices, the trees grow under optimum conditions, producing healthy, quality fruit.

Fruit at Karusa

Due to the arid climate, minimal chemical sprays are used to keep the fruit healthy - thereby incorporating our sustainable farming philosophy to respect the local fauna and flora. We are implimenting farming practices into a holistic, organic and biological approach to keep up with the trend of producing healthy fruit and respecting natural resources and the environment.

Our orchards produce healthy sun-ripened fruit that include apricots, plums, pluots and nectarines.

Our orchards and packing facility is audited yearly for Global Gap, Natures Choice and Leaf standards to meet the strict health and quality standards of the international export market. We have also been acredited with Fairtrade status in regard to our social responsibilities towards our employees. Supermarket group Marks & Spencer have also awarded Karusa with "Field to Fork" accreditation. All these ensure our clients receive only the best from a well-managed and operated producer.

SCEP ~ Schoemanshoek Community Enhancement Project

With the 2007 opening of parliament, President Thabo Mbeki made the following statement: “All South Africans need to work together in striving for freedom of poverty and moral decay.” In response to this a national newspaper, “The Burger”, and the Business School of the University of Stellenbosch held an one day conference with the theme, “Social Cohesion.”   SCEP did a presentation and was identified by the conference organizers as a community development project that can make a positive and practical contribution to Social Cohesion in South Africa.

At Agri Klein Karoo Region Conference in Oudtshoorn, SCEP was designated to be the most successful Upliftment Initiative in the region for 2010/2011.

SCEP AS A COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROJECT ~ Has no political or religious affiliations with any other party or church and caters for the needs of the local Schoemanshoek and Cango Valley communities, immaterial of colour, race or creed.
